Daihatsu to Exhibit Unique Concept Cars at Tokyo Auto Salon 2019 Exhibits include the soon-to-be-launched COPEN Coupe and the 1960s-era P-5 racing car

Dec. 19, 2018
Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd.

Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Daihatsu”) will exhibit highly original mini vehicles and compact passenger concept cars at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2019, which will be held at Makuhari Messe(Mihama-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba Prefecture) from January 11 to 13, 2019. Daihatsu will also exhibit the COPEN Coupe—of which sales are scheduled—and the P-5 racing car from the 1960s.

The theme of the Daihatsu booth will be “a sense of fun for everyone.” It will draw on the world views of a variety of Daihatsu vehicles—including the COPEN mini convertible sports vehicle, the Mira Tocot mini passenger car which was released in 2018, the Thor and Boon compact passenger cars, and the Hijet Truck mini commercial vehicle—and exhibit unique, custom versions of these models.

Equipped with a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic hardtop, the COPEN Coupe is a genuine coupe with limited sales of just 200 units scheduled. Order applications will be accepted from interested customers via a dedicated website from January 11, 2019. Also on display will be the COPEN Cero Sports Premium Ver.—with its unique mesh-type front grille and plated ornamentation, this concept car proposes a new worldview.

The P-5 racing car, restored this year thanks to the volunteer efforts of employees, will also be exhibited. The P-5 racing car won the GP1 class at the third Japan Grand Prix, held in 1968. The goal of the restoration, which was carried out by veteran employees and recent recruits in collaboration, was to pass down Daihatsu’s unique challenging spirit and technologies in the realm of small cars to younger generations.

With its rich line-up of mini vehicles and compact passenger cars, the booth seeks to demonstrate how Daihatsu is developing the appeal of each of its models; at the same time, it will also exhibit vehicles from the company’s past which exemplify its DNA, and showcase the company’s unique “sense of fun.”
