Daihatsu announces a partial redesign of its Hijet Cargo mini commercial vehicle and Atrai Wagon mini passenger vehicle Both vehicles now feature Smart Assist Ⅲ, and the Hijet Cargo becomes the first mini commercial vehicle*1 to be equipped with a collision avoidance system that recognizes and reacts to pedestrians

Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “Daihatsu”) has announced partial redesigns to its Hijet Cargo mini commercial vehicle, Atrai Wagon mini passenger vehicle, Hijet Sloper, Atrai Sloper and Atrai Rear Seat Lift mini welfare vehicles, and its series of special purpose vehicles based on the Hijet Cargo. The company has also announced a partial upgrade to its Hijet Truck. The vehicles will go on sale nationwide on November 13.

The Hijet mini commercial vehicle was launched in 1960. Since then, it has been cherished by customers in a wide variety of industries, including the farming, construction and service industries. Total production volumes have now exceeded four million units, and the Hijet is the model with the longest history in the current Daihatsu line-up. The Hijet Cargo is an evolution of the Hijet Light Van that was released in 1961. Praised for its convenience and ease of loading, the model now enters its 10th generation. The Atrai Wagon is a mini passenger vehicle based on the Hijet Cargo, and can be used for a wide variety of purposes from daily life to business and leisure.

As part of these partial redesigns, the models now feature the Smart Assist Ⅲ collision avoidance system^*2, which utilizes stereo cameras. All models realize high safety performance and, in addition to its auto high beam, the Hijet becomes the first mini commercial vehicle to be equipped with a collision avoidance braking system that recognizes and reacts to pedestrians.

The Hijet Cargo and Atrai Wagon also feature updated interior and exterior designs. The Hijet Cargo adopts a modified front mask that heightens the stability of its exterior appearance; it also comes with removable corner pieces on either side of the front bumper, thereby resulting in lower maintenance and replacement labor costs in the case of damage. Inside the vehicle, both the instrument panel and the seats have been updated, with black now used as the primary color, and convenience has been increased through the provision of a variety of storage spaces. The Atrai Wagon now sports a more high-quality exterior through the use of LED headlights and a plated front grille. Black has also been chosen as the primary color for the Atrai Wagon’s instrument panel and seats.

Going forward, Daihatsu will continue to expand the use of Smart Assist among its mini commercial vehicles and, by actively promoting its adoption, provide a safe and secure driving experience for as many customers as possible. At the same time, the company will continue to support all working customers with a rich and varied line-up.

Details of the partial changes to the Hijet Cargo and Atrai Wagon

1. Improved safety performance (Hijet Cargo and Atrai Wagon)

• The vehicles are equipped with the Smart Assist Ⅲ collision avoidance system. As part of measures to reduce traffic accidents, the government is promoting the spread of “Safety Support Car S.” ^*3 Vehicles equipped with Smart Assist Ⅲ fulfill the requirements for the“Wide” ranking^*3 under this system.

• Equipped with rear corner sensors^*4

• Equipped with emergency stop signal^*4

• Equipped with VSC&TRC^*4, while ABS is fitted as standard to all grades

• Equipped with hill-hold system^*5

*3: The government is promoting cars equipped with automatic brakes as “Safety Support Cars.” Cars additionally equipped with devices that control acceleration when the accelerator pedal is pressed accidentally are called “Safety Support Car S.” Safety Support Car S is divided into three ranks according to the functions they feature. The top rank is “Wide,” and requires cars to be fitted with automatic brakes (that react to pedestrians), devices that control acceleration when the accelerator pedal is pressed accidentally, lane departure warning, and advanced lights.

2. More attractive interior and exterior styling and improved convenience Hijet Cargo

A sharp and powerful design with replaceable corner pieces

• The hood position of the Hijet Cargo’s front mask has been raised to increase the impression of volume in the lower part. This results in a sense of stability and, in combination with the grille shape that flares out at the bottom, creates a feeling of security.

• The lower edges of the left and right sides of the front bumper have been raised by 20 mm from the previous model, while the bottom part of the left and right sides of the bumper now feature removable corner pieces^*6. These corner pieces reduce the risk of damage—by being scraped against the curb, for example—and also mean that, if they do become damaged, there is no need to replace the entire bumper. This contributes to reduced labor costs for maintenance and replacement.

• The adoption^*7 of LED headlights and LED fog lights increases visibility, energy-savings and realizes an improved sense of luxury

• The design of the multi-reflector halogen headlights has been changed, resulting in a sharper appearance

• The design of the rear combination lights has been changed, and now features LED tail and brake lights

A wide variety of body colors

• A “Selectable Color Pack” has been newly established^*8 for the Hijet Cargo, enabling customers to choose from a total of seven different colors

A sophisticated interior with added convenience

• The Hijet Cargo’s instrument panel now features black as its primary color; its updated design provides a greater sense of quality

• The meters feature multi information displays, and have been made larger for enhanced visibility

• Fabric seat covers are now water-repellent^*9

• The steering wheel has been made thicker for improved grip, while clean-air filters and keyless entry (integrated into the key) have been added^*10

• The passenger seat and center trays have been widened for greater convenience, over-head shelves^*11 are now mesh-shaped to enable contents to be identified at a glance, while multi-utility hooks and AC100V power outlets^*12 have been newly added for added convenience

• A “Beauty Pack^*13” that guards against ultra-violet rays, infra-red rays, and hay-fever inducing pollen is now available as a manufacturer’s option for enhanced amenity

2 Atrai Wagon
A design that combines both outstanding functionality and quality

• The Atrai Wagon features a newly designed plated front grille. Its slit-shaped plated hood garnish underscores the width of the vehicle, while the contrasting Piano Black accents provide a sense of outstanding quality

• The adoption of LED headlights ^*14 and LED fog lights ^*14 increases visibility, energy-savings and realizes an improved sense of quality. The LED fog lights are fitted with two side-facing plated decorations, and combine with the hood garnish in an integrated design

• The design of the multi-reflector halogen headlights has been changed, resulting in a sharper appearance

• The design of the rear combination lights has been changed, and now features LED tail and brake lights

• The design of the rear license plate garnish has been modified to provide a greater sense of quality

A wide variety of body colors
The Atrai Wagon is available in a total of seven colors, including the new Plum Brown Crystal Mica

A sophisticated interior with added convenience

• The Atrai Wagon’s instrument panel now features Premium Shine Black as its primary color; while the addition of decorative plating and silver paint increases the sense of outstanding quality

• The seat fabric is now predominantly black, realizing a unity with the similarly colored instrument panel and enhancing the interior’s sense of quality

• Light-emitting meters^*16 now provide an advanced and high-quality design

• The passenger seat and center trays have been widened for greater convenience, over-head shelves^*11 are now mesh-shaped to enable contents to be identified at a glance, while multi-utility hooks have been newly added for improved convenience

• A “Beauty Pack^*17” that guards against ultra-violet rays, infra-red rays, and hay-fever inducing pollen is now available as a manufacturer’s option for enhanced amenity

3. Improved fuel efficiency (Hijet Cargo and Atrai Wagon)

• The use of devices to improve fuel efficiency enable the Hijet Cargo to achieve 17.8 km/L (2WD, AT/MT), and the Atrai Wagon to achieve 15.2 km/L (2WD, AT) ^*18
- Equipped with the eco IDLE idling prevention system
- Equipped with electric power steering
- The Hijet Cargo features newly developed 145/80 R12 tires

• The Hijet Cargo Special Clean and Special Clean SA Ⅲ grades are eligible for eco-car tax exemptions (vehicle acquisition tax: 60%; vehicle weight tax: 40%)^*19

Changes to the Friendship Series of mini welfare vehicles

• The Hijet Sloper and Atrai Sloper wheelchair accessible vehicles feature three-point seatbelts for wheelchair users. In addition, while maintaining the convenience of the sliding slope, the slope’s assistive mechanism has been updated to significantly reduce the operating force required when stowing the slope away

• The entire Friendship Series—which comprises the Hijet Sloper and Atrai Sloper wheelchair accessible vehicles, and the Atrai Rear Seat Lift passenger seat lift vehicle—feature the same partial redesign changes as the base Hijet Cargo and Atrai Wagon, including the addition of Smart Assist Ⅲ

Changes to the Hijet Cargo series of special purpose vehicles

• The Deck Van, Cargo Two-Seater, Cargo Two-Seater Clean, Cargo Two-Seater Blind-spec., Cargo Separate Two-Seater, and Cargo Refrigerator Vehicle are part of Daihatsu’s unique production vehicle line-up, and the series has been widely praised by customers working in a variety of different industries. These special purpose vehicles feature added convenience in line with the changes to the Hijet Cargo, which is the base vehicle for the series

• The Deck Van combines a cabin that seats four people with an open deck, and has been widely praised by customers using it both for business and for leisure
- The luxury G SA Ⅲ and G grades feature a plated front grille, LED headlights, and LED fog lights as standard, providing enhanced styling and quality
- A guard frame is now fitted as standard; the shape of the guard bar has been changed to enable freight to be secured more easily by rope or other means, and so heightens the ease of use of the open deck
- The front passenger seat has been changed from fixed seating to slide seating with a 120 mm slide
- The newly established Color Pack^*20 means that a total of seven colors are now available

Details of the partial upgrades to the Hijet Truck

• The first mini commercial truck^*21 to feature LED headlights ^*22

• ABS fitted as standard to all grades

• Rear tow hook fittings equipped to all grades as standard ^*23

• Bright Silver Metallic is now the standard body color, while Fine Mint Metallic has been added as an option^*24

• A T-hook on the guard frame is fitted as standard to all grades

• The Color Aluminum Refrigerator Truck has been added to the Hijet Truck special purpose vehicle series. All stages from initial development to production of the Refrigerator Truck were carried out by Daihatsu Motor Kyushu Co., Ltd. Some minor specifications have been modified for vehicles in the special purpose vehicle series.
