Daihatsu to Update its Kyoto Plant with the Aim of Increasing Competitiveness

Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Daihatsu”) has announced it will update its Kyoto Plant (Ooyamazaki-cho, Otokuni-gun, Kyoto Prefecture) which first began operations 45 years ago. Recognizing that the auto industry is in the midst of a once-in-a-century period of change, via these updates Daihatsu aims to strengthen its production systems in order to maintain and improve its global
competitiveness.

In its role as a production base for the Daihatsu Group, Kyoto Plant has primarily been entrusted with the production of compact cars. Thus far, in addition to key Daihatsu compact cars such as the Charade, Pyzar, and Terios, the plant has also been contracted to manufacture compact cars and commercial vehicles for Toyota Motor Company, including its Probox, Succeed, Sienta, and Porte models.

The updates to the plant will further advance the implementation of Simple, Slim, and Compact (SSC), a key phrase in Daihatsu production; they will also provide the plant with the ability to produce new, next-generation models that are currently in development based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA). By allying the traditions it has cultivated thus far with the latest technologies, Kyoto Plant will not only be capable of producing high-quality small cars, but will also become a more environmentally friendly plant that produces fewer CO2 emissions.

Daihatsu seeks to realize next-generation automobile production environments, and the updates to the plant will both make it easier for employees to work and enable flexible responses to changes in production loads. The updates will also encourage local residents to feel more familiar with manufacturing and thereby promote interactions with the local community.

Work on the plant updates is scheduled to begin in September 2018, with operations at the new plant set to commence in a phased manner. Based on its Light You Up approach, Daihatsu will continue to engage in a variety of reforms with the aim of providing optimal mobility to each of its customers.

Overview of the New Kyoto Plant (scheduled)

・Location: 1 Koaza Kitahosoike Aza Shimoueno, Ooyamazaki-cho, Otokuni-gun, Kyoto

・Site area: approx. 154,000 m2 (no change)

・Total floor area: approx. 42,000 m2 (newly constructed sections only)

・Capital investment: approx. 35 billion yen

・Start of operations: operations are scheduled to commence in a phased manner, with construction set to be complete in around 2022

・Processes to be updated: painting, assembly, etc.
