Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Daihatsu”) announced today that it has now sold a total of three million vehicles*1 equipped with the Smart Assist*2 active safety system as of August 31, 2020.

Daihatsu first equipped Smart Assist to the partially redesigned Move in December 2012. This was the first mini vehicle to be equipped with collision-avoidance support braking and other advanced technologies at an affordable price. Subsequently, in addition to evolving its collision-avoidance support function such as through the use of compact stereo cameras, functions were added to help customers drive safely and with peace of mind. These functions include supporting recognition, reducing driving burden, and assisting with parking. Furthermore, Daihatsu has been expanding its line-up of vehicles installed with Smart Assist based on the approach of “providing advanced technologies to everyone.” This includes adopting Smart Assist not only in mini vehicles and compact passenger cars but also the Hijet mini commercial vehicle, the Gran Max compact commercial vehicle, and special purpose vehicles.

The latest Smart Assist is installed in the new TAFT mini crossover which was launched in June 2020.
Improved performance in its collision-avoidance support function was achieved, including the use of a newly developed stereo camera to enable the detection of pedestrians at night and motorcycles following behind the vehicle.

At present, Smart Assist is equipped to a total of 16 different models: 12 mini vehicles and four compact cars. It is available on all models in Daihatsu’s line-up with the exception of the Copen mini passenger vehicle. Currently, approximately 90 percent*3 of customers choose to purchase grades that have Smart Assist installed, and the functionality and affordability of the system have received widespread praise.

In order to provide safety and peace of mind to as many customers as possible, going forward Daihatsu will continue to both develop and actively promote the widespread uptake of Smart Assist.
