TOPAZ Engine

"TOPAZ" stands for "Top from A to Z." The name was chosen because the TOPAZ was designed to be a top performer in a whole range of categories, starting with power, ecology and reliability. TOPAZ engines have outstanding response and reliability, thanks to their electric fuel injection system, distributor-less ignition, knock-control system and direct-drive valves. Its clean power performance makes the TOPAZ the ideal power unit for a new generation of small cars.Daihatsu always wants you to enjoy vehicles with the best performance and quality. This newly enhanced power unit is our latest, most powerful and lightweight engine for small cars.

New high-performance 1,300cc engine

Our new 1,300cc engine delivers both high-performance and excellent fuel economy, thanks to the off-set crankshaft, DVVT variable valve-timing system and resin long-branch intake manifold. It also offers compact size and low noise as a result of the silent chain and thin-walled cast-iron cylinder block. In addition, placement of the newly-developed three-way catalytic converter closer to the engine has lowered the level of exhaust emissions to 25% below the limit stated by J-TLEV, Japan's exhaust emission standard to be introduced in the year 2000. The 1,300cc engine also features Daihatsu's original ion-current based knock control and flame detection systems. The new 1,300cc engine is part of the 1SZ engine series developed jointly with the Toyota Motor Corporation and was awarded the title "The Engine of The Year 1999" by Engine Technology International.

New high-performance 1,300cc turbocharged engine

This is the turbocharged version of the above engine. The DVVT variable-valve timing system has been precision-matched to the turbocharger, producing class-leading power performance and outstanding acceleration under all conditions. Exhaust emissions are 25% or more below the 2000 standard (J-TLEV).

New electronically-controlled automatic transmission

This electronically-controlled four-speed automatic transmission (torque conversion ratio) is the lightest in this class, weighing 15% less than the previous version. The same size as a light-car four-speed automatic transmission, it can handle torque generated by engines ranging from 660 cc to 1,300 cc turbocharged units. Fuel efficiency has been improved by 10% over a conventional automatic transmission by comprehensively reducing mechanical loss and using the latest electronic control technology. The same technologies are also used by a four-speed automatic transmission developed at the same time for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configurations.
