The ultimate eco-car, a fuel cell vehicle combines hydrogen with oxygen from the air to generate electricity, creating water as its only emission, and operating in near silence. Daihatsu's fuel cell R&D initiative goes back to 1972, with full-scale development taking off in 1996. 1999 saw Daihatsu's announcement of a reformer-type fuel cell vehicle based on the Daihatsu Move minivehicle. After developing a high-pressure hydrogen gas-type fuel cell vehicle, in January 2003 we became the first to receive authorization from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for a small fuel cell vehicle and began testing on public roads in February of that year. In June 2004 we began a leasing arrangement with the Osaka Prefectural Government. The Tanto FCHV is built on the same body as the Daihatsu Tanto minivehicle. While increased capacity hydrogen tanks offer extended cruising distance per fill-up, the spacious interior seats four adults in comfort. LED headlights help save power, while an energy indicator and other features add convenience.
