Daihatsu installed its world-leading "intelligent catalyst" in this lightweight, compact high-performance engine which employs a resin long-port intake manifold and resin long-port intake manifold an resin headcover with integrated air cleaner case. Nanotechnology developed by Daihatsu enabled atomic-level coating of palladium onto the perovskite crystal ceramic substrate. Thanks to the catalytic converter's self-regenerating precious-metal formula, it maintains initial performance over the long term, while reducing the amounts required of precious rare-earth resources.

PHOTO Ultra-compact direct injection gasoline engine

Developed by Daihatsu for minivehicles(660cc), this ultra-compact 3-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine features flat combustion chambers and high-pressure slit injectors, producing uniform (stoichiometric) combustion for fuel efficiency and high performance throughout the engine's revolution range. The high compression ratio of direct injection, together with DVVT (dynamic variable valve timing), variable intake mechanism, and reduced friction loss in all engine parts, help achieve top-of-its-class fuel economy of 28.0km/l* in Japanese 10/15 mode testing.
With its 3-way catalytic converter, it also reduces emissions 75% below Japan's year 2000 standards levels. This ultra-clean engine boasts top-of-its-class maximum output of 44kW(60ps), a remarkable feat of technology.

Daihatsu developed this next-generation direct- injection diesel engine especially for minivehicles. Its direct- injection common rail system achieves outstanding combustion performance, for large low-speed torque and remarkable fuel economy.
To enhance residual gas scavenging efficiency, which affects 2-cycle engine performance, this configuration employs dual exhaust ports and a reshaped scavenging port, thereby raising power and reducing exhaust gas. Piston and combustion chamber shapes are optimized for high performance, high efficiency and cleaner emissions. This advanced diesel engine is ready to meet Japan's new 2005 emissions regulations.
